The effect of semantic information on saccade trajectory deviations

چکیده
In recent years, many studies have explored the conditions in which irrelevant visual distractors affect saccades trajectories. These previous studies mainly focused on the low-level stimulus characteristics and how they affect the magnitude of curvature. The present study explored the possible effect of high level semantic information on saccade curvature. Semantic saliency was manipulated by presenting irrelevant peripheral taboo versus neutral cue words in a spatial cuing paradigm that allowed for the measurement of trajectory deviations. Findings showed larger saccade trajectory deviations away from taboo (versus neutral) cue words when making a saccade towards another location. This indicates that due to their high semantic saliency, more inhibition was necessarily applied to taboo cue locations to effectively suppress their competing as saccade targets.

The relationship between inhibition of return and saccade trajectory deviations.
After presentation of a peripheral cue, a subsequent saccade to the cued location is delayed (inhibition of return: IOR). Furthermore, saccades typically deviate away from the cued location. The present study examined the relationship between these inhibitory effects. IOR and saccade trajectory deviations were found after central (endogenous) and peripheral (exogenous) cuing of attention, and b...
متن کاملStimulus-salience and the time-course of saccade trajectory deviations.
The deviation of a saccade trajectory is a measure of the oculomotor competition evoked by a distractor. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of stimulus-salience on the time-course of saccade trajectory deviations to get a better insight into how stimulus-salience influences oculomotor competition over time. Two experiments were performed in which participants were requir...
متن کاملEarly and late modulation of saccade deviations by target distractor similarity.
In this study, we investigated the time course of oculomotor competition between bottom-up and top-down selection processes using saccade trajectory deviations as a dependent measure. We used a paradigm in which we manipulated saccade latency by offsetting the fixation point at different time points relative to target onset. In experiment 1, observers made a saccade to a filled colored circle w...
متن کاملRecent advances in the study of saccade trajectory deviations
In recent years, the number of studies that have used deviations of saccade trajectories as a measure has rapidly increased. This review discusses these recent studies and summarizes advances in this field. A division can be made into studies that have used saccade deviations to measure the amount of attention allocated in space and studies that have measured the strength of the activity of a d...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal aspects of oculomotor inhibition as revealed by saccade trajectories
The spatial and temporal effect of distractor related inhibition on stimulus elicited (reflexive) and goal driven (voluntary) saccades, was examined using saccade trajectory deviations as a measure. Subjects made voluntary and reflexive saccades to a target location on the vertical midline, while the distance of a distractor from the target was systematically manipulated. The trajectory curvatu...
